HDF laminate or engineered wood: how to choose the right floor.

Both look like wood. One is a printed image of wood on a high-density fibreboard core; the other has a real hardwood top layer. Here is how they compare in use, in Egypt’s climate and in price.

What each floor is

HDF laminate has a high-density fibreboard core, a printed decor paper and a hard melamine wear layer, and clicks together over an underlay without glue. GCT supplies Forest HDF, produced in one of Unilin’s factories in Belgium, and Balterio, in 7 and 8 mm thicknesses with AC4 and AC5 wear ratings.

Engineered wood has a real hardwood top layer, usually European oak, bonded to a cross-laid core that keeps the board stable when temperature and humidity change. It is finished at the factory with lacquer or oil. GCT supplies Grabo engineered wood from Hungary.

When to choose HDF

Choose HDF laminate for apartments, offices, shops and hotel rooms where scratch resistance and budget matter more than the feel of real wood. AC4 suits offices and hotel rooms; AC5 suits busier commercial areas.

When to choose engineered wood

Choose engineered wood for villas, executive offices, hotel suites and residences where the floor is part of the design and should age like wood. Because the top layer can be refinished, a well-kept floor can be renewed instead of replaced.

Egypt’s climate

Heat in Cairo and humidity on the coast make solid wood boards move. HDF and engineered wood are both more stable, but both need an expansion gap at walls and thresholds, a moisture barrier over a dry screed, and time to acclimatise on site before installation.

Where neither is the right floor

Bathrooms, kitchens with standing water and areas that are wet-mopped every day need a water-resistant floor. Vinyl and LVT give a wood look and cope with water. See vinyl flooring.

From our reference list

  • Arab Bank, Fifth Settlement. Contractors Orascom and IETC, consultant Abu Dhabi Architecture and Planning Group. Carpet, parquet and vinyl.
  • Natural wood floors include the Egyptian Drilling Company head office in Cairo and the Belayim Petroleum Company headquarters in Port Said, all areas in both.

From our technical office

  • Before installation, our technical office prepares shop drawings with the floor layout, dimensions and installation method, and a cut list of material sizes and quantities, so less material is wasted.
  • Our own installation teams lay the floor. They are trained and certified by the manufacturers.
  • Material warranties run from 10 to 30 years depending on the product, and our installation warranty from 1 to 5 years.
  • After handover, we offer site visits, technical follow-up and maintenance contracts.

Frequently asked questions

Is HDF the same as laminate?

In Egypt, ‘HDF’ usually means laminate flooring with a high-density fibreboard core. Laminate is the type of floor; HDF is the core material.

What do AC4 and AC5 mean?

AC classes rate the wear resistance of laminate floors under EN 13329. AC4 suits general commercial use such as offices and hotel rooms; AC5 suits heavy commercial traffic.

Can engineered wood be sanded?

Yes, if the hardwood top layer is thick enough. Ask for the top-layer thickness of the product you are considering.

Which floor is cheaper?

HDF laminate usually costs less per m² than engineered wood. The final cost also depends on the underlay, skirting, profiles and subfloor preparation.
